Queensland Symphony Orchestra participated in the 2016 Olympic Suite, under direction of Lucas Vidal alongside with Alondra de la Parra.

It was announced on the 9th of May 2017, at a ceremony at the Lincoln Center in New York, that the Theme was the winner of a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction. The piece was created for US cable TV ESPN’s original composition, which accompanied its coverage of the Rio Olympics in 2016.

The success of the theme also counted with the participation of Brazilian singer Ladi Anne, who was the main voice selected to bring the very needed Brazilian soul to the piece, giving her a crucial role on the success of the award-winning theme.

The work, Los Capitanes, Olympic Suite, was commissioned by ESPN from Alondra de la Parra and composer Lucas Vidal.
Inspired by the stories, struggles and triumphs of athletes, the Olympic Suite was recorded with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of de la Parra.

ESPN used the music in its programming, marketing and promotional efforts and featured a series of behind-the-scenes vignettes on its creation across its platforms.

Frequently in demand as guest conductor, Alondra de la Parra has led more than 70 orchestra around the world. She took up her appointment as Music Director designate with the QSO in February 2016 and began her three-year role as Music Director in 2017, the orchestra’s 70th anniversary year. She will be resident in Brisbane throughout the year.
